Join Shivam Parikh and Heena Gohil on another memorable Udaipur journey as we drive from YAAN Resort to explore the historic Sahastra Bāhu Temple at Nagda, popularly known as the Sas-Bahu Temples. This visit was part of our special three-temple exploration near Udaipur, completed in our 2024 Mercedes-Benz A 200 Petrol, running on E20 petrol. The car handled the journey comfortably as we travelled through the scenic roads surrounding Udaipur and the Aravalli region before arriving at this remarkable heritage site. Located at Nagda, around 22 kilometres from Udaipur, the Sahastra Bāhu complex is known for its intricately carved stone architecture and is generally dated to approximately the 9th–10th century. The site consists of two main temples of different sizes and stands near the scenic Bagela Lake. Incredible India Today, the complex feels more like an extraordinary heritage monument and archaeological ruin than an active place of worship. Walking through its surviving pillars, carved ceilings, arches, sculptures and weathered stone structures gave us a fascinating look into the craftsmanship and architectural vision of ancient Rajasthan. Rather than referring literally to a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, the popular name evolved from the original title over time. What made this place especially interesting was the contrast between its age and the remarkable detail that remains visible today. Even though significant sections have been lost or damaged over the centuries, the surviving architecture still communicates the scale, artistry and cultural importance of the original complex. Nagda itself is an ancient settlement at the foothills of the Aravalli range, and Rajasthan Tourism highlights the area for its historic remains and the elaborately carved Sahastrabahu temples.
